Fort
Stewart,
Georgia
Almost half of Liberty County's usable land area is occupied by the
U.S. Army installation, Fort Stewart. Fort Stewart is located
about forty miles west of Savannah. It was created in 1940 as an
antiaircraft training facility. In 2004 the 280,000-acre facility, the
largest in area in the eastern United States, is the base for the Third
Infantry Division (Mechanized) and the First Battalion, Seventy-fifth
Ranger Regiment, Rapid Deployment Force. Hunter Army Airfield, located
at Savannah, is also part of the fort.
